To the “Drowning Doom” (Goth/Death Metal): See, what Brutal Legend does is it combines gameplay elements with extreme visual and auditory experiences, to provide an understanding of these disparate genres. Heavy metal – influenced by blues and psychedelic rock, originating in the 60s and 70s subgenres of black metal, death metal, gothic metal, hair metal, power metal, speed metal, thrash metal, and more. The core of this game, in turn, revolves around the sheer number of metal genres consumed by the public. Rock and roll – a mix of rhythm and blues with some country, salted to taste with a touch of gospel and folk music, of all things. With axe and guitar (axe and ‘axe’) in hand, the Roadie – one Eddie Riggs – must unite the faction most representing classic heavy metal and do battle to free the world from the demons and undead hordes of thrash and black metal, respectively. Roadie (played by Jack Black, because who else) from a somewhat questionable band that is butchering heavy metal music ends up cast into a distant past, a world that is built upon the principles and appearances of classic metal record album covers (Frank Frazetta was a major inspiration), and ruled by factions exemplifying different genres within rock and metal music. The game can be summed up in a fairly straightforward manner.
